When we choose to read the Bible, we often find it difficult to understand this part of the story. We find it hard to understand how one man in a position of power could be so angry and cruel that he would bring his own fate down upon himself. The most common interpretation of this story is that Pharaoh was not pleased with the reports of the Israelites’ progress in the wilderness, and so he ordered his court magician, Balaam, to curse them. This is why when Balaam goes to work on the Israelites, they become unruly and unruly in their ways. However, what we cannot see in this story is that Balaam was like Pharaoh: He too had a great and wonderful God at his feet.
